Gorge transformed the project space VOID London into a fictitious landscape through which the viewer could pass. Eroded rock faces created out of layers of recycled books; some reaching eight feet tall, seemingly jutted out of the gallery floor. Fragile plant forms cast in polyester resin emerged out of the open pages.
Maslen & Mehra created a similar installation titled Woodland in Sydney’s CBD during the Olympics 2000. Gorge and Woodland were ambitious installations that referred to the symbiotic relationship of Nature and Culture. Woodland was an installation similar in character. Instead of walking through the exhibition the viewer was able to walk 360° around the self contained window display units in which they created a representation of a cross-section of land.
